Travel advice
The City of Jyväskylä is located in Central Finland some 270 kilometres north of Helsinki. Jyväskylä can easily be reached by airplane, train or bus.
By airplane
Jyväskylä airport is situated in Tikkakoski approximately 23 km from Jyväskylä. There are daily flights from Helsinki to Jyväskylä. The flight from Helsinki to Jyväskylä takes about 35 minutes and the drive from the airport to the center of Jyväskylä roughly 20 minutes. There is no airport transfer between Tikkakoski and the center of Jyväskylä. Thus a taxi should be booked in advance before boarding the airplane in Helsinki.
By train
The train journey from Helsinki to Jyväskylä using the Pendolino express service takes 3.5 hours at its fastest while the trip from Tampere to Jyväskylä takes roughly 1.5 hours. Train tickets can be purchased from VR net store or in the ticket office at airport.
If you are flying into Helsinki airport, the simplest solution is to take the airport train from the airport to Tikkurila and change there to Jyväskylä train. Please note that it is not possible to buy a ticket in the train. You can either take a taxi, Finnair bus or city bus to reach Tikkurila or Helsinki city center. Catching the train at Tikkurila cuts down the time of travel to Jyväskylä a little.
By bus
Jyväskylä can also be reached easily by bus; tickets can be bought from Matkahuolto’s net store which also provides details of routes, timetables and fares. The journey from Helsinki to Jyväskylä (usually via Lahti) by express bus takes approximately 4.5 hours. Many express buses also call at Helsinki airport, where the bus can be boarded.
A slightly quicker bus connection from the center of Helsinki to Jyväskylä is operated by Onnibus. This takes about 3.5 hours (but does not call at Helsinki airport). Jyväskylän Matkakeskus (Jyväskylä Travel Centre)
Trains and buses arrive at the Jyväskylä Travel Center ("Jyväskylän Matkakeskus" in Finnish) located in the heart of the city.
