SUPERTED 2023 meeting

The final SUPERTED meeting took place 23rd and 24th of January 2023. The meeting was organized in hybrid format where the CNRS representatives at Institut Néel in Grenoble offered a meeting room for participating the meeting and the remote participants joined in using a online meeting application. Those participants that traveled to Grenoble had the additional benefit of touring the facilities in Grenoble and discussing the project in person. And naturally, they got to visit the beautiful city of Grenoble as well. Alternatively, thanks to the hybrid format, it was possible to avoid traveling and be mindful of the carbon footprint of the project activities. However, this was the last possibility to have an in person meeting during the project. Thus, visiting the project location in Grenoble had indisputable benefits.

The meeting occurred at an exciting time as the sites in Jyväskylä and Grenoble were at the brink of detecting electromagnetic radiation using the X-ray and THz detectors developed during the project. Consequently, spirits were even higher than normal as the meeting participants discussed the project in detail. The first day was dedicated to project progress and each work package was discussed in detail. In addition, the consortium started to prepare for the end of the project responsibilities by reviewing the remaining deliverables and reporting duties. Each work package has one more deliverable to deliver and the consortium is working relentlessly towards a review article on the core principles relevant for the project. Additionally, the Project Officer has initiated the final review process by asking the consortium to set a date. For the final review meeting, the consortium must prepare to discuss the project in detail and draft the technical report. The final review meeting takes place in March, although there are 60 days to complete the final project report after the project ends on 28th of February 2023.

Tuesday 24th of January 2023

Since the consortium got together only 7 months prior in Pisa, everyone was up to speed with the most important project developments. Accordingly, the second day was dedicated to inspiration and future opportunities. The morning started with three thought provoking talks and continued with lively discussions on future opportunities that might originate from the lessons that have been learned within each work package. The meeting carried on until lunch break when the participants in Grenoble said goodbye to the remote participants and continued to tour the facilities. Although remote participation offers more flexibility and is the environmentally conscious choice, it was agreed that projects like SUPERTED cannot relay solely on remote meetings. It is those small discussions, perhaps with a coffee cup outside the meeting schedule, that inspire the scientists and may even accidentally find a solution to an ongoing problem.
